Descendants of GUstav Thiel

This photograph contains images of all the children of Gustav Thiel from both his marriages who survived into adulthood except for the oldest child, Maria Christina Thiel. She was born in 1850 on their adventurous journey from Germany to Palestine just before they reached Jerusalem and passed away in 1869 at school in Beirut. 

At the centre are our great-grandfather Gustav Thiel (1825-1907) and his second wife Anna Maria Rausch (1838-1906).

In the back row are the children (from left to right):
Paul Ferdinand Thiel (1865-1907), Karl Wilhelm Thiel (1867-1947), Johanna Maria Thiel (1873-1968), Ernst Heinrich Thiel (1869-1954), Ernst’s first wife Gertrude Charlotte Wilhelmina Lotze (1868-1955) , Hermann Gustav Thiel (1878-1948) and Gustav Thiel (1851-1937) the eldest son from our great-grandfather’s first marriage to Maria Catharina Grosssteinbeck ( 1826-1862).

Three framed photographs of the three absent children are on the table to the right of the photograph. They were Peter Johannes Thiel (1864-1942) the eldest child of Gustav Thiel and Maria Rausch who was in Germany, their son Otto Theodore Thiel (1874-1943) who was in Cape Town and Samuel Gustav Thiel (1852-1921) the second son from Gustav’s first marriage who lived in Beaconsfield near Kimberley.

In front of Paul Thiel sits his wife Philomena Tausend (1872-1946) with their son Max Gottlob Thiel (1895-1984) on her lap. Their other children are Johanna Hermina Catharina Thiel (1893-1973) who stands next to her grandmother, Paul Ernst Georg Thiel (1890-1949) who sits directly in front of her and his brother Otto Gustav Thiel (1892-1964) who sits directly to his right.

In front of Karl Thiel, who holds his daughter Julia Wilhelmine Thiel (1894-1979), sits his wife Cecilia Magdalena Siemssen (1869-1960) with her daughter Maria Philomine Pauline Thiel (1896-1990), who was christened, on her lap. Next to her stands her daughter Cecilie Maria Wilhelmine Thiel (1892-1974) and in front of her sits her son Karl Johannes Otto Thiel (1891-1974) .

Johanna Thiel (Weichardt), a widow when this photo was taken, stands directly behind our great-grandfather. He holds her son, Louis Theodor Weichardt (1894-1985) on his lap and her elder son, Carl Gustav Ernst Weichardt (1892-1953) is sitting in front of his grandfather.

Ernst Thiel and his wife have their eldest daughter Charlotte Ella Maria Thiel (   -1951) between them.

Hermann Gustav Thiel (1878)- 1948), the youngest child of our great-grandfather was not yet married when the photo was taken.

In front of Gustav Thiel, our great-grandfather’s eldest son from his first marriage, sits his wife L.M. (Pike) Grant (1870-    ) with her son Lionel Francis Albert William Thiel (1895 -1971) on her lap and their daughter Daisy Mary Maria Thiel (1889-1920) in front of her.
